Cherry Shrimp and Snails: A Natural Cleanup Partnership

Jacob Day November 3, 2026 3 minutes read

Shrimp and snails make a classic duo in small planted tanks. Both graze on algae and leftover food, and they largely ignore each other. When chosen carefully, snails can become useful partners for your cherry colony.

    Why They Get Along

Cherry shrimp are peaceful, and most small snails pose no threat to them. They occupy slightly different niches, with snails eating soft algae and shrimp picking at biofilm and tiny particles. The result is a cleaner tank with less effort.

    Good Snail Choices

Nerite snails are popular because they eat algae well and do not reproduce in freshwater. Mystery snails add color and are interesting to watch, while ramshorn and bladder snails help clean up but multiply readily. Choose based on how much population control you want.

    Watch the Population

Some snails can multiply rapidly when food is abundant. If a population boom happens, reduce feeding and remove extras by hand. Overfeeding is almost always the cause.

    Competing for Food

Larger snails can sometimes beat shrimp to the food. To make sure everyone eats, spread food around the tank or feed in more than one spot. Observe your tank at feeding time to be sure the shrimp get their share.

    Mineral Needs

Both shrimp and snails need calcium for strong shells. Provide a bit of mineral support if your water is soft, and watch for pitted or eroded snail shells. Healthy shells on snails often signal healthy mineral levels for shrimp too.

    Quarantine New Snails

Plants and snails can bring in hitchhikers or pests. Rinse plants well and watch new snails for a week or two before adding them to the main tank. A little caution protects the whole system.

    Algae Control Expectations

Neither shrimp nor snails will erase every speck of algae, especially if light and nutrients are high. Think of them as helpers, not miracle workers, and be prepared to wipe the glass yourself now and then. Good light control and regular maintenance remain the foundation of a clean tank.

    Choosing Plants

Hardy plants such as anubias, java fern, and moss give both groups places to graze and rest. Choose species snails will not shred, and your plants will stay tidy.

    A Balanced Little World

With sensible numbers and good feeding habits, snails and shrimp keep each other company beautifully. They make a small tank feel like a living ecosystem. When you are ready to start or expand your colony, explore our cherry shrimp for sale and pick some shrimp to share your snails’ home.
